Are National Forests free for dry camping?

Dispersed camping is generally free in National Forest areas where camping is permitted, usually without a parks pass. Local permits, road restrictions, designated-site rules, and stay limits can still apply. Use the forest’s Motor Vehicle Use Map and current access notices to choose a vehicle-accessible site. Forest Service guidance ↗

Dry camping means camping without hookups. A developed campground can still charge a nightly fee even when its sites have no electricity, water, or sewer connections.

About this directory: The free-only filter includes reviewed free sites and National Forests with documented dispersed camping. Those forest entries are labeled “Generally free” because individual campsites, vehicle access, and local fees still need checking. “Not verified” entries without that forest-policy basis remain outside the filter. A forest-wide camping closure is not included as a generally free option.

What does America the Beautiful cover?

The federal pass covers entrance and standard day-use fees at participating National Park Service, Forest Service, BLM, Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and Army Corps of Engineers sites. It normally covers one private vehicle and its passengers, or the passholder plus three adults where admission is charged per person. NPS pass benefits ↗

America the Beautiful pass camping benefits
Pass or feeCamping benefit
Regular annual passNo free paid campsites or camping-reservation discount.
Senior or Access PassOften 50% off eligible campsite fees. Check the campground’s discount rules.
Reservations & special permitsAdditional requirements and charges can apply; a pass does not replace a reservation.
State & private parksGenerally outside the federal pass program; check their own fees and passes.

Annual pass rules ↗ · Camping discount rules ↗ · USGS pass FAQ ↗

Padre Island: A valid America the Beautiful pass covers entrance and dispersed beach camping at North Beach, South Beach, and Yarborough Pass, with no additional camping charge. Without a qualifying pass, private-vehicle entry is $25 for seven days. Malaquite campground is $14/night ($7 with Senior/Access); Bird Island Basin is $8/night ($4 with Senior/Access). The regular annual pass does not waive those campground fees. Official Padre Island fees ↗

Forests use one approximate marker per named forest, with nearby markers grouped at wider zoom levels. Search by name to find a forest, or browse all 154 national forests.

Confirmed family camps. Markers show approximate locations, not campsite availability, entrances, or property boundaries.

Driving directions: Google Maps and Apple Maps open the named destination. For large forests and parks, select your entrance or campsite before driving; a destination listing is not a verified vehicle access point. Some remote or marine locations have no driving route.

Free dry camping: The filter includes two groups: reviewed locations with a documented free vehicle-camping option, and National Forests with documented dispersed camping under the generally free Forest Service policy. “Generally free” forest entries require local campsite and vehicle-access checks; developed campgrounds, special areas, or permits may cost money. Entrance/pass costs are shown where reviewed. Other “Not verified” locations stay outside the free-only filter. Check vehicle notes and official forest maps for Jeep and teardrop access.

Camping options: ✓ Offered · Empty box: unavailable · ? Not verified. The dispersed-only filter includes checked offerings. “Camped there” shows our confirmed family visits; an empty box means not recorded.

Some places require designated dispersed sites, permits, or fees. Backcountry sites may be reached only on foot or by boat. Access rules, fire restrictions, and seasonal openings are linked from each location. External links open in a new tab.

Weather: Nearby NOAA station observations refresh every 10 minutes. Readings can be up to 3 hours old and within 62 miles of the map point. Observation times use your browser’s time zone. A dash means no recent nearby reading; forecast links remain available. Weather source ↗

Sources and what’s included

Memorial inventory reviewed September 14, 2026; other land inventories reviewed September 8, 2026. Includes all 154 named national forests, 63 national parks, 138 national monuments, and the 31 National Memorial units in the National Park Service inventory, plus selected grasslands, BLM areas, seashores, primitive campgrounds, and state/water-management lands. Memorial entries are sightseeing destinations; camping and fees remain unverified. Non-NPS memorials and affiliated areas are outside this memorial inventory. This is an expanding directory, not every free campsite in the country. Broad destinations and specific campgrounds may overlap. Multi-state places appear in each state group and once on the map. The free-only filter includes reviewed free sites and forests with generally free dispersed camping. The two levels are labeled separately; a forest policy does not verify every campsite, fee, road, or current opening.

Sources: National Park Service, Forest Service boundaries and recreation records, and BLM recreation data and individual agency pages, including South Florida Water Management District. Camping costs and access notes were reviewed September 8, 2026. Missing camping evidence is left unverified. Read our travel log for the family camps.

SOUTH DAKOTA · DISPERSED CAMPING

Five camps near Wind Cave & Badlands

  1. BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST · WIND CAVE BASE

    North Pole Road — FR287

    43.76318, -103.73200

Views & privacy: Pine-covered ridges and open meadows, with some sites tucked back on short spurs. Scout beyond the roadside pullouts; some camps are visible to neighbors.

Jeep & camper: Gravel approach with trailer access reported in 2025–2026. Check public/private boundaries and choose a legal bare pad.

  2. BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST · WIND CAVE BASE

Bear Mountain Lookout Road — FR293

    43.85519, -103.76568

Views & privacy: Elevated forest scenery and reports of quiet evenings. Look for a legal side pad below the developed lookout. Daytime UTV traffic is possible.

Jeep & camper: Gravel mountain road with trailer access reported in the area. This pin marks the lower camping area, not the tower or the campsite described in the August 2026 review. A longer drive to Wind Cave is the tradeoff.

  3. BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST · WIND CAVE BASE

    RD356 / Palmer Creek area

    43.90099, -103.52400

Views & privacy: Trees and terrain separate camps, with views varying by pad. A May 2026 visitor reported an RV site 80 yards back from the road.

Jeep & camper: Scout the first few sites when entering from the north. A September 2026 visitor used the second site with a 30-foot trailer. The road gets rougher farther in. This area pin does not identify that visitor’s exact pad; follow open roads and permitted camping corridors.

Camp reports & location details ↗
  4. BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST · SCOUT AS A BACKUP

    FR307 meadow

    43.72029, -103.75753

Views & privacy: A side access leads to an open meadow surrounded by forest. Promising for space and quiet, with meadow scenery rather than broad mountain views.

Jeep & camper: Narrow access and potentially soft ground. The detailed access report is from 2023, so current conditions are less certain. Scout the turnaround and a legal bare pad first; grassy meadow parking may not meet the fire order described below.

Camp reports & location details ↗
  5. BUFFALO GAP NATIONAL GRASSLAND · BADLANDS BASE

    Baja dispersed camping area

    43.71127, -102.10081

Views & privacy: Open prairie and Badlands views, with room to spread out beyond the entrance. This is an OHV recreation area, so quiet depends on riders. Expect wind and little shade.

Jeep & camper: The pin marks the area entrance. Scout an established, durable site within the signed boundary in dry weather. Wet ground has stranded campers; the interior is a poor choice when rain is forecast.

A September shortlist for a Jeep and camper, favoring views, space between camps, and sites reached by short side spurs. Start with North Pole Road and Bear Mountain. Four options are in Black Hills National Forest; Baja is in Forest Service–managed Buffalo Gap National Grassland.

These camps are outside the national parks. Coordinates identify areas to scout. Choose an established, legal pad and check the approach and trailer turnaround before pulling in. Neither an app pin nor a camper review guarantees an open, suitable site.

Plan two bases

Allow roughly 45–90 minutes to Wind Cave’s visitor center from the forest options, with Bear Mountain generally the longest drive. Baja is roughly 20–30 minutes from Badlands’ Ben Reifel Visitor Center. These are broad planning estimates, not routed travel times. Bring water and pack out all waste.

Map links open each scouting coordinate with driving directions. Review the route against the Forest Service motor vehicle map; do not follow a suggested shortcut over private land or a closed road. Download all five scouting pins (GPX).

Restrictions checked September 9, 2026

Black Hills: At review, Stage 2 order BKF-194-2026 prohibited off-road vehicle use except parking where vegetation is absent within 10 feet of the vehicle. Choose an existing bare pad reached legally; a camping-app overlay does not override the order. Campfires were prohibited. The order runs through December 27, 2026 unless rescinded; check the current order before traveling.

Buffalo Gap: Stage 1 restrictions prohibited dispersed campfires at review. Check current grassland restrictions.

In Black Hills National Forest, camp at least 100 feet from streams and half a mile from developed recreation sites. Motorized dispersed camping is allowed only where the current map and orders permit it. Forest camping guidance.

Research reviewed September 9, 2026 using onX, Trails Offroad, Forest Service information, and linked camper reports. Solitude, road condition, and availability vary by date and individual site.
